Gary land and barry dugan met in the early 1990's in Vermont and always stayed connected through their love of snowboarding, creating, and seeking out new ideas to bring to life.
Since they first met in Vermont, the friendship and communication between them has always been genuine. As Gary was transitioning from photographing skateboarding and surfing in his hometown of Virginia Beach to the mountains of Vermont to create new friendships and subjects to shoot with - Barry had packed his car in Boston and pointed it north to Burlington, VT in '92 to join the crew at Burton Snowboards. Inevitably they met on the slopes riding, understood they were part of something collectively larger, and remained friends. When Gary moved to Boston for new opportunities and Barry transitioned to the agency world post-Burton, they hung out when they could, collaborated on art shows featuring Gary's work, and always discussed riding, the community they came up with, and threw ideas around. Fast forward to the covid pandemic of 2020 - 2021 and calls between them increased. Feeling like caged animals, unable to meet with friends or travel, they discussed creating a book after Gary went through a portion of his 1990's 35mm snowboarding slides that had been in storage for over two decades. So the foundation of East Street Archives was born during those calls. It would be a book to start with, but the ideas and creativity were constantly going back and forth between them. The 437 page book was designed and printed in 2021. Response was incredible. The book is a raw and unfiltered look at what snowboarding on the East Coast looked and felt like in the 1990's. The two orchestrated a small book tour in March of 2022 just as covid restrictions were lifted. During the tour, money was raised for the CHILL Foundation and the community of friends and families that showed up proved that East Street Archives was moving in the right direction. What next? Bring it to the snow. Let's get everyone back outside riding. Together. With many late nights and intense planning, the first HOMESICK event was produced at Stratton in March 2023. Dive into the event section of this website to learn more about that magical week and the memories that were made. So.......the business of creating, taking risks, and pushing boundaries is what East Street Archives is about. Thanks for being a part of it. We are just getting started.
